A British Prisoner-of-War Escapes!
You are a British Private fighting in the American Revolution.Â
You were captured and are now planning your escape from a prison in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Seven other men have agreed to join you. You all climb the fence and escape the camp at nightfall. Someone in your party heard about a local Loyalist family who might be able to give you clothes, food, and money for travel.
You and your men make it to the nearby Loyalist farm. The owner is actually part of a large network of Loyalists who help escaped British prisoners reach New York. He recommends heading to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to meet with his connections there. You can also head to the Loyalist stronghold of Gunpowder Falls in Maryland, where one of your fellow escapees has family.
You decide to use the Loyalist family’s connections and head to Bucks County. There are two contacts there. One is a Quaker family called the Tomlinsons. The other is a local blacksmith in Newtown named John Atkinson. Both are connected to Loyalist guides who can help you reach New Jersey and eventually New York. Who do you choose to help you get to New Jersey?
You arrive in Bucks County and find the Tomlinson farm. They give you food and shelter. As Loyalists, they have helped other escaped British prisoners, even giving them money for travel. The Tomlinsons offer to connect you with Moses Doan, a member of the Doan Gang, who can take you across the Delaware River. Do you agree and wait for Moses to arrive?
Moses Doan is waiting for you! You are safe for now but the war is not over and many obstacles lay ahead.
Moses Doan carries you to safety!
You decide it is too dangerous to trust an outlaw like Moses Doan and head for the woods nearby, intent on finding another way to New York. You run into a revolutionary militia patrol and are taken into custody again!
You are taken into custody again!
You arrive in Bucks County and find John Atkinson’s blacksmith shop in Newtown. Atkinson knows a guide in New Jersey who can take you to New York. He tells you to leave from Dunk's Ferry along the Delaware River in Bensalem to meet his guide. Do you follow Atkinson’s advice and risk being caught along the way? Or do you find an alternate route?
When you arrive at Dunk’s Ferry, you head into the tavern to book your passage. The tavern is busy and you are getting suspicious looks. You order drinks and try to blend in. When the other customers leave the room, you nervously confer with your men. Instead of waiting for the paid passage, should you hijack a boat instead?
You all head out to the ferry boat where the ferrywoman Alice, an enslaved woman, is waiting. You board the boat and order Alice to leave immediately. Alice is frightened but begins to row your group across the river. Armed men race to the banks but don’t fire for fear of shooting Alice. You and your men arrive safely in New Jersey.Â
The new plan paid off and you and your group are safe!
After talking to your group, you decide to stick with the original plan. Stealing a boat is risky and could get you re-captured. While you wait for the hired ferry, a group of strangers whisper their suspicions about you. They decide you are not who you say you are and surround you. They hold you prisoner in the tavern while waiting for the local militia.Â
The local militia arrests you and your group.
You decide not to follow Atkinson’s advice. You are worried about getting caught on the road or on the ferry. You and your men travel at night to the Plough Tavern in Plumstead. The tavern has a large stable with several horses. You discuss whether you should steal the horses and cross the river yourselves rather than waiting in a busy tavern before taking the ferry.

Upon entering the barn you are surprised by a military picket stationed at the tavern. You and your men weren’t aware that the Plough Tavern is occupied by revolutionary soldiers.

You’re not sure who you can trust and decide to find your own way to New York. You and your men head to Kuglers’ Ferry in Solebury, operated by a Loyalist named John Kugler. After booking passage over the Delaware River, you wait in the tavern until the boat returns. However, when Kugler’s maid sees him helping your group, she quickly alerts the local militia.
The militia arrives before you are able to board the boat and arrest all of you.
You decide to trust your companion and head to Gunpowder Falls. You leave at nightfall and head south to Maryland. Your friend from Maryland leads the way, confident that his route will be safe. Unfortunately, when you reach Maryland you meet Continental Army soldiers asking people for passes. When you cannot present your papers, your true identity is discovered.
